Six Questions with Donna Druchunas

This week, we sat down with Donna Druchunas, instructor of the online Craftsy classes Knit Sock Workshop, Knit Original Toe-Up Socks, and Knit Original Cuff-Down Socks.

In this chat learn all about Donna’s must-have knitting items, the animals that keep her company, and her biggest knitting disaster!

Donna on set here at Craftsy!

Thanks for playing along, Donna! And to all you Craftsy readers out there, make sure to check out Donna’s awesome classes. And remember, we post a new Six Questions every week, so keep checking back!

1. What was your first knitting project?

I don’t remember. I learned to knit from my grandmother when I was a little girl, but the only thing I remember making is a swatch of honey-comb cables made in yellow yarn.

2. What are your desert island knitting supplies?

1 metric ton of Koigu yarn, already wound into balls

1 KnitKit

1 set of Addi Lace Click interchangeable needles

1 Jordana Paige L.J. Kaelms bag

3. What item has been in your stash the longest?

Well, it’s not mine but my mom’s stash is in my house as well and she has an afghan she started making in the 1970s that isn’t finished yet. So it’s the oldest stash yarn and the oldest UFO in the house. That beats out my record by far because I only started knitting again in 1998!

4. Cat person, dog person, or do pets just interfere with your knitting time?

Cat! No question about it. I even wrote a book of knitting patterns for cat lovers, Kitty Knits. It has patterns for cat beds and toys and lots of projects that are decorated with cat motifs for cat lovers.

5. What was your biggest knitting disaster?

The first Aran sweater I made was with superwash wool. I made my swatch, carefully measured, knitted up the sweater, sewed it up, tried it on and loved it. Then I washed it! As soon as it hit the water, my beautiful sweater grew from a size 40 to a size 54, and the sleeves hung down to my knees. I cut off the excess on the sleeves and put new cuffs on, and I still wear that sweater even though it’s more of an oversized jacket now.

6. In 10 words or less, what inspires you?

Everything. Especially travel, nature, history, and folk art.

Six Questions With Vanessa Wilson

This week, we sat down with Vanessa Wilson, instructor of the online Craftsy class Sew Little: Nursery Design!

In this chat learn all about Vanessa’s must-have sewing item, the animals that keep her company at home, and her first sewing project (which was mistaken for a designer piece!).

The one and only Vanessa Wilson, instructor of Sew Little: Nursery Design.

Thanks for playing along, Vanessa! And to all you Craftsy readers out there, make sure to check out Vanessa’s awesome class, Sew Little: Nursery Design, and learn how to create custom-made pieces of home décor that perfectly match your style! And remember, we post a new Six Questions every week, so keep checking back!

What was your first sewing project?

My first sewing project was a purse I made from a pair of designer jeans that no longer fit me. I figured I would turn them into a functional accessory if I couldn’t wear them… because they were pricey! I cut them up and sewed a bag with a fraying strap and embellished it with beads and patches. It was perfect because it was original and functional!  I used the back pockets to store my cell phone, keys, etc without having to dig around inside the purse.  I was a babysitter at the time and the lady who I babysat for asked me if it was a Juicy Couture purse one day! Talk about a compliment!

What are your three desert island sewing supplies?

Assuming I’d have all the other essentials like food, water and shelter.  The three sewing supplies I couldn’t be without are a treadle sewing machine, a boombox (I can’t sew without my music!), and my fabric scraps!

What item has been in your stash the longest?

It would have to be the first thread spools my mom brought over with the 1966 Singer sewing machine she taught me to sew on — all of which she bought at a yard sale for $10.  I keep trying to tell her I can’t sew with old thread that is going to fall apart.  She insists there is nothing wrong with the thread even though I when I unravel it its a totally different color further inside the spool than on the outside. Hmmmm.

Cat person, dog person, or do pets just interfere with your sewing time?

I’m more like a farm animal person. We have dogs, rabbits, chickens, and a pig on our little farm. They would interfere with my sewing time if I had to look after them but that’s what I have kids and a husband for.  I send them off to feed and care for the animals while I sneak away to my studio!

What was your biggest sewing disaster?

Ha! Don’t make me relive it! When I first learned how to sew I became obsessed with Project Runway and decided to try my hand at just draping some jersey knit on my mannequin to make myself some crazy skirt I designed as I went along.  I must have really thought the creative juices were flowing because I started cutting strips into the waistband and overlapping others, sewing them down and after about three times of that I went to “try it on” and just about fell to the floor laughing.  The only thing funnier than that was watching my husband pull it out of the clean laundry to put it away and after turning it around five times he still couldn’t figure out what it was!

In 10 words or less, what inspires you?

Problems needing functional and inexpensive solutions.

Announcing the Mother’s Day Project Contest!

It’s a proven fact that there’s no better gift than a handmade gift. So with that in mind, now is the time to start making a crafty gift for a mom in your life. After all, May 13 is not too far away! As if making a mother happy isn’t reason enough to get started, we’ve got another: the Craftsy Mother’s Day Project Contest!

The rules are the same as with other contests: You make a project (no matter what your craft) that is inspired by or for Mother’s Day, and upload it to Craftsy with the words “Mother’s Day Contest” in the title. The project that gets the most hearts by Mother’s Day (again, May 13) wins. That project owner will get a free Craftsy class!

Wrack up those hearts by inviting your friends and family to Craftsy. For someone to “heart” your project, all they have to do is be a registered member. So show us what you’ve got, and show us how great you think moms are by uploading your awesome projects! Don’t forget to put “Mother’s Day Contest” in the title (or we won’t know it’s a submission).

Upload your project now!

To view current project entries and “heart” your favorite projects, click here to see Mother’s Day Contest entries!

Meet Susan, and Learn All About Craftsy’s Presence at Trade Shows!

Meet Craftsy's Susan Juvet

Meet Susan. She is a stellar new member of our Craftsy team, and she’s been up to some awesome stuff since she’s been here! She hit the ground running on day one, and has already helped Craftsy attend a trade show (STITCHES South), with many more on the calendar! Susan is a great addition to our growing team here at Craftsy HQ, and we are so excited about how she is helping us connect with the Craftsy community, and helping members connect with each other.

I had the chance to sit down with Susan this week (after all, her desk really is right next to mine) and talk to her a bit about her experience at STITCHES South, what she’s planning, and what her favorite part about working at Craftsy has been so far. Thanks for playing along, Susan!

Hi Susan! You’re fairly new here at Craftsy HQ, can you tell us a little bit about your position and what you’ve been doing so far?

Hi! Yes, I am about 1 month old here, but I’ve known the Craftsy folks for quite some time because I interacted with them in my previous job at BurdaStyle. It is so awesome to be a part of this team! I’ve been working on new and exciting marketing initiatives. This includes live events and creating unique activations to engage the Craftsy community around the globe. I’ve been putting together events we will be participating in, and other events we plan on hosting in the future. Keep an eye out on the site for the latest news and updates! I am also working on new partnerships and ways to work with other online communities and brands.

You recently attended STITCHES South in Atlanta, Georgia. How was the show? Did you come home with any new and exciting tips?

STITCHES South was a really great experience. I am not new to the craft industry as a whole, but definitely new to the knit and crochet worlds. I learned so much just by meeting some of the other vendors and discussing trends in yarn, online consumers, pattern trends, and more. It was really great to meet and learn from founders of the event being an event producer myself, as well as the brilliant minds behind XRX.

What was your favorite event at STITCHES?

My favorite event had to be the fashion show. At every STITCHES event there is a not-to-be-missed fashion show that takes place one evening. This show consists of gorgeous garments worn down the runway, and the following day you can actually purchase the patterns seen in the show on the Market Floor. It’s really fun to see new ways to wear knits. I also enjoyed the pajama party, where everyone gets into their pj’s and slippers and meets up to play fun games and win prizes. It was just a great time to mingle with some of the attendees in a relaxed environment. Apparently the pj party got wild after I left and security showed up!

Speaking of trade shows, when will Craftsy be attending another one?

The next event on our calendar is Maker Faire Bay Area on May 19 and 20. This event is also open to the public, and a ton of fun…but it is not focused on just one type of craft. Instead it is all about making, creating and socializing. There are robots, laser shows, experiments, and even shopping from local area craft vendors. It is undoubtedly one of my favorites and I try to go year after year in New York and California.

What kinds of things can we look forward to seeing at the Craftsy booth at Maker Faire?

The Craftsy booth will be the number one place to be! We have two project stations where you can get in touch with your DIY spirit and meet fellow attendees. One project station will be hand sewing a small robot toy. This project is courtesy of Spoonflower Fabrics, the online community where you can print your own fabric design and shop from other designers. The second project will be some fun button adorned accessories you can craft up with buttons from Blumenthal Lansing. Oh, did I mention not only do you get to make a FREE project, you also walk away with a FREE Craftsy class? The Craftsy Make & Take is a must see at Maker Faire.

Finally, how are you liking Craftsy so far? What’s your favorite aspect of working here?

I love working here. It is so awesome to be able to try new ideas and really get the community offline engaged with us. We are real people after all and we want to make sure everyone gets to know the real us. It is so exciting to be a part of such a fast growing community, too! I like that we offer something for almost anyone. My absolute favorite aspect of working here, though, is sitting beside you, Megan. Obviously!

Six Questions With Wendy Butler Berns

This week, we sat down with Wendy Butler Berns, instructor of the online Craftsy classes Art Quilting 101, Machine Quilting, and Pictorial Quilting Techniques.

In this chat, we learn all about Wendy’s first quilting class, the source of some funny sounds you might have heard in the background of one of her classes, and her biggest source of inspiration.

Wendy Butler Berns on the set of her Craftsy class, Pictorial Quilting Techniques.

Thanks for playing along, Wendy! And to all you Craftsy readers out there, make sure to check out Wendy’s awesome classes! And remember, we post a new Six Questions every week, so keep checking back!

What was your first quilting/sewing project?

In 1993, I took my first quilting class when my youngest child headed to preschool.  It was a sampler class covering hand piecing and hand quilting.  I just knew I would not have time for the handwork, so I had the instructor show me how to do the piecing and quilting by machine too…. In the end following this first class, I had completed TWO quilts. I have been quilting with that same passion ever since.

What are your three desert island quilting/sewing supplies?

Fabric, scissors, and a glue stick.

What item has been in your stash the longest?

My Gingher scissors.

Cat person, dog person, or do pets just interfere with your quilting/sewing time?

I have always been more of a cat person…. They are always joining me to keep me company in my studio. In fact, while filming for Craftsy, our female Siamese, kept jumping onto the table where we were working. You can hear her meowing in the background of the Machine Quilting course!

What was your biggest quilting/sewing disaster?

Actually, to tell the truth, I cannot think of one. Maybe one suppresses the really haunting memories. A number of times, I have completed a piece, realizing that my values were too close together because I had not spent enough time audition my fabrics ahead of time.

In 10 words or less, what inspires you?

The world around me- nature and my endearing family members.

Six Questions with Jennifer Hansen

Jennifer HansenThis week, we sat down with Jennifer Hansen, Stitch Diva and instructor of the online Craftsy class Tunisian Crochet: Revolutions in Color and Style.

In this chat, we learn all about what has been in Jennifer’s stash the longest, the big life change that pushed pets out of her family, and how a sizing error led to one of her biggest crochet disasters.

Thanks for playing along, Jennifer! And to all you Craftsy readers out there, make sure to check out Jennifer’s awesome class Tunisian Crochet: Revolutions in Color and Style! And remember, we post a new Six Questions entry every week, so keep checking back!

1. What was your first knitting/crocheting project?

My first project ever was a massive, and very ugly, crocheted blanket.  I covered the sides in fringe to try and hide my mistakes (I kept missing the last stitch of the row and my blanket was getting smaller and smaller as I progressed….). But by the end of that project, I was confident with a hook!

2. What are your three desert island knitting/crocheting supplies?

Hamanaka Crochet Hooks, Row-counting abacus and Jenkins Woodworking Hairpin Lace loom.

3. What item has been in your stash the longest?

I’ve got some vintage mohairs that I scored at the thrift store when I first started crocheting. They are gorgeous and probably 50 years old.

4. Cat person, dog person, or do pets just interfere with your knitting/crocheting time?

I used to be a cat mom and a bird mom. But then I spawned a human child and that’s the creature that just edged out all the other pets!

5. What was your biggest knitting/crocheting disaster?

Probably my first blanket project.  Or the whole chest of beautiful baby clothes that I knit and crocheted for my son while I was pregnant.  All of them were too small except for the bibs.

6. In 10 words or less, what inspires you?

People with the courage to follow their dreams.

Meet Karleen, and Help Her Help Others!

Please meet Karleen! She’s one of our new Craftsy co-workers, and as you’re about to learn: she’s pretty awesome. So awesome in fact, that she’s going all the way to Africa (specifically Rwanda) to help build homes. As if that wasn’t enough, she wants to go the extra mile and bring hats and blankets to help the children make it through the rainy season.

I had a chance to sit down with Karleen to learn more about her trip, ask about giraffe-riding (first thing I would think to do), and find out how she likes it here at Craftsy. She also told me how you—yes: you, dear reader—can help her help others! Our interview is below.

Karleen Mercuri: She's coming in, 12:30 flight.

So tell us about your trip to Africa. And where in Africa are you headed?
This May, I’ll be heading with a team of 10 to a village outside Kigali, Rwanda. We’ll be visiting a remote village where resources are very scarce, and beginning the process of building homes for the 88 families living in the village. We’ll also be bringing food and other supplies along with us to provide the families with some basic necessities.

We understand you’re looking for donations. But not the monetary kind. So what is it exactly that you’re looking for people to give?
The children of the village are in dire need of basic necessities like clothing to help bring them through a rough rainy season. Our team would love the help of the Craftsy community in bringing knit hats and quilted blankets overseas with us to distribute to the children and families we meet there.

Traveling that far; that’s certainly above and beyond when it comes to helping others. Have you been on trips like this before, or is this your first one?
This is my first trip of this kind, though I’ve been hoping to take a relief trip to Africa for some time. I am incredibly excited about this opportunity! We will also be experiencing a whole new way of life for two weeks, as we’ll be living the way the villagers live. Sleeping in huts with no running water or electricity will definitely be a challenge!

What inspires you to help people?
I think what is so great about modern technology with computers, internet, and smart phones is that it allows us to be connected with a global community. Which means that even people as far away as Africa are our neighbors and members of our community, and we are much more informed about their needs. I am just excited to be able to help out a neighbor or two!

Aside from seeing smiles, what else are you looking forward to seeing while you’re out there? Plan on riding any giraffes?
Giraffe-riding sounds a little sketchy to me, but I’d give it a shot! I’m mostly excited to see the picturesque countryside in person. In all the photos I have seen, Rwanda is a gorgeous country!

Finally, you’re new to the Craftsy team. How do you like it here? And be honest, am I your favorite co-worker? I am, aren’t I?
Well I love Craftsy, but as for you David….Just kidding, you are great and so are the rest of the talented people of the Craftsy team! There is plenty of knowledge and inspiration floating around here, and I’m looking forward to soaking it all up!

Thanks, Karleen and godspeed!

Help Karleen help others! Send blankets and hats to her here at Craftsy, so she can take them with her on her journey. Please send us your donations so they arrive by May 15th, and address them to:
